Snoring and sleep apnoea can be very problematic for some people and have a negative impact on their daily lives.
Here at the Essex Smile Centre we can offer patients a range of highly effective anti-snoring dental appliances that can be used to treat sleep apnoea and snoring.
There are 3 main types of sleep apnoea:
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
This is the more common type of sleep apnoea and is caused by the soft tissue at the back of the throat which relaxes during sleep, blocking the airway and resulting in loud snoring.
Central Sleep Apnoea
This less common type of sleep apnoea is more complicated and occurs when the brain fails to send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. People with this type of sleep apnoea rarely snore.
Complex Sleep Apnoea
This complex sleep apnoea syndrome is the combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnoea.
Sleep apnoea has been linked to memory problems, tiredness, depression, high blood pressure and strain on the heart which is why it is important to seek help if you suspect you may be suffering from it.
If it is just snoring then the chances are you will still maintain a reasonable amount and quality of sleep so are not affected during the day.
Those with suspected sleep apnoea can find it difficult to confirm as it happens obviously whilst they are sleeping so a partner or loved one can be crucial in ascertaining what is happening at night. Some of the warning signs of sleep apnoea include;
It can be helpful for those with suspected sleep apnoea to be recorded whilst they sleep and for those who share a bed to ask their partner to make note of any unusual breathing, gasping or choking that occurs.
Recent studies show the direct correlation between teeth grinding (bruxism) and sleep apnoea. That is why as dentists we are the first port of call for detection, diagnosis and treatment.
At The Essex Smile Centre we are leading UK clinicians for Somnowell anti-snoring devices that can treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Firstly I would like to express my thanks to all of the team at The Smile Centre. I am a relatively new (& was a very nervous) patient to the surgery. From my first phone call I was extremely impressed when I spoke to a lady called Caron who managed to calmly find the right dentist for me as she listened to my fears and anxieties.
We run regular promotions and events to ensure our patients achieve great value on a wide range of services. Take a look at our latest practice offers.
Don’t let your fear of visiting the dentist stop you from receiving the treatments you want and need – we offer extra support for nervous patients.
