3 ways to minimise the risk of a dental emergency on your summer holiday
Dental emergencies are difficult to navigate and impossible to predict. But when it comes to summer holidays filled with scoops of ice cream, garden parties, fizzy drinks, and plenty of running around, it’s important to stay vigilant and consider some of the ways that you can minimise the risk of an accident or sugar-induced emergency.
In this blog, we’re considering the causes of tooth decay as well as lost or chipped teeth, with suggestions on how to protect your teeth from internal and external damage. The aim? To ensure that you don’t need the services of an emergency dentist in Essex this summer.
It’s not just for kids…
Before we get into our tips, it’s important to note that this isn’t just advice for parents looking at how to protect their kids. You wouldn’t believe how many emergency dental appointments are arranged for adults who had one too many drinks, who got overexcited at a party, or consumed too many cocktails and not enough water to protect the teeth.
1. Cut down on sugary foods and alcohol
Sugary foods and alcohol are as bad as each other when it comes to the health of your mouth. Excessive alcohol intake is often linked with higher oral cancer rates, while sugary foods are directly responsible for the wearing down and demineralisation of the surface of the teeth which ultimately cause tooth decay and tooth wear.
While neither of these issues are going to appear overnight, summer is often a time when people let their guard down and forget about the importance of protecting the vulnerable surface of their teeth – a matter made worse by a greater consumption of sugary foods that are consumed by young people.
TOP TIP: Don’t just assume sweets and ice cream are the problem. Dried fruit, fruit juices, fizzy drinks and wine can be just as bad when it comes to sugar and acid content.
2. Protect your teeth at all costs
Tripping over, falling off a bike, or getting hit in the face with a football are common injuries during the summer. However, there are things you can do to protect your teeth – for example, why not buy a bottle opener rather than open a beer with your teeth or wear a mouthguard or retainer if you think your next picnic game will turn a little too competitive!
The number of chipped or missing teeth we see in the summer months is extremely high, among both adults and children – which is why mouthguards and retainers alongside the right care and attention are key.
3. Keep up with your oral hygiene routine
There is no better way to avoid an emergency dental appointment than simply keeping on top of your oral hygiene routine – brushing regularly, flossing, and drinking plenty of water to wash away any sugar residue which sticks to your teeth.
There’s a lot to think about during the summer holidays so follow this advice to make sure you avoid adding an emergency dental appointment to your busy schedule.
