    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is teeth whitening suited for?

There are many things that can affect the colour of a person’s teeth; from the food they eat and the beverages they drink, to smoking, age or even genetics. Just as people’s hair and skin colour vary so does the colour of their teeth. Not many people have naturally bright white teeth and it’s common for them to become more discoloured as they age.

There are two types of tooth discolouration – extrinsic and intrinsic.

Extrinsic: occurs when they outer layer (enamel) develops staining from foods and beverages such as tea and coffee or smoking. This type of discolouration can be improved by professional teeth cleaning and are often not suited to bleaching treatments.

Intrinsic: this happens when the inner part of the tooth (the dentin) develops yellowing or darkens in colour. This type of discolouration cannot be improved by products such as stain-removing toothpaste and is best suited to professional whitening treatments such as bleaching.

Our expert dentists will assess your teeth’s condition and using their knowledge and experience – will provide guidance on the best teeth whitening solutions for you.

    • Improvement in appearance of smile.

    • Best suited whitening system chosen to suit your teeth.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS FROM TEETH WHITENING?

Teeth whitening is very safe but, as with all treatments, there is a potential for some minor side effects. This can include sensitivity of the teeth to cold, a sore throat and discomfort or white patches on the gums. If any of these side effects do occur they are usually temporary and will be gone within a few days.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

Depending on your teeth and the type of treatment – the effects of professional teeth whitening can vary. Most of the colour change is permanent but if you smoke, or eat and drink products that stain your teeth, then the results will not be as long-lasting.

CAN’T I JUST USE HOME WHITENING KITS?

Home whitening kits are a cheaper option used by those wanting a quick fix. However, recent research has shown that products purchased online or in supermarkets only have an effectiveness of 1-2%. Professional teeth whitening allows your dentist to use a higher concentration of agents for better and longer-lasting results.

Teeth whitening can be a complicated procedure, which is why we always recommend seeking the advice of a professional dentist when you are considering this treatment.
