Get photo ready with teeth whitening

7th August 2017

It is that time of year again, weddings and special events pepper our diaries. Here at The Essex Smile Centre we want to ensure you are always photo ready, so why not consider a course of teeth whitening to rejuvenate the colour of your smile.

Teeth can become discoloured for a number of reasons. The most common include the foods and drinks we consume, medication and lifestyle factors such as smoking, all of which can lead your teeth to appear yellow or stained. Teeth whitening is a safe and effective way to brighten the natural colour of your teeth without causing any damage to your teeth and gums.

How does it work?

When you apply the teeth whitening gel to your teeth the small peroxide molecules pass easily through the micropores and come into contact with the staining molecules that have built up in your enamel and dentine and breaks down into active oxygen and water. The active oxygen is a powerful oxidising agent, this basically means that the large, dark staining molecules get broken down into smaller particles and turned white in colour – exactly like when you apply bleach when cleaning. The overall result is that your teeth look brighter and whiter!

The great thing about peroxide based gels is that it can only work on organic stains and so doesn’t affect the hard tissues of your teeth (the enamel and dentine) or any restorative dental work you may have – that’s why peroxide based teeth whitening is the only type approved by international dental associations and offered by dentists worldwide.

The basic teeth whitening formula

For whitening gel to effectively lighten and whiten your teeth this basic formula is needed:

Whitening results = strength of gel x time

Basically, this means that the higher the strength of gel and the longer that the gel is in contact with your teeth, the more stains will be broken down and the whiter your smile will become (to a limit of course)! However, it is not always necessary to have the highest strength gel.

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

  • Teeth whitening can drastically improve the appearance of your smile, for relatively minimal outlay.
  • Teeth and gums are not damaged by the teeth whitening procedure and you may find that your gums appear healthier following treatment.
  • Teeth whitening can improve a person’s self-confidence and the personal feel-good factor. Whiter teeth can give you the confidence to smile and smile more often.
  • Whiter teeth can help to make you look younger, minimising the appearance of facial wrinkles.

All you need to know about anti-wrinkle injections

10th July 2017

Considering anti-wrinkle injections? Here at The Essex Smile Centre we have put together everything you need to know before you undergo treatment.

Anti-wrinkle injections are a prescription medicine that are used to improve the look of moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles and lines on a temporary basis. Anti-wrinkle injections can only be used to treat those wrinkles that appear when you talk, laugh and smile, they are not suitable for wrinkles present when your face is at rest. Anti-wrinkle injections work by blocking the signals from the nerves to the injected muscles, meaning muscles no longer contract strongly. This helps to improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

The Procedure

At your initial consultation, our therapist Luke will discuss what you hope to achieve with the treatment. Luke is highly trained and is an assessor for Visage Aesthetics, an expert in his field, so you can be confident of only receiving the highest possible standard of care. The treatment takes 15-20 minutes, using a very fine needle to minimise discomfort. Results should be visible within 5-7 days and you will be able to see the full effect in 14 days. Most improvements will last for around 3 months, at which point you will need to attend for a top-up treatment to maintain the results.

Benefits

  • Anti-wrinkle injections can be completed in your lunch hour and you will then be able to return to work with very few visible side effects. Results are visible immediately, but tend to look better after a few days.
  • Anti-wrinkle injections are administered quickly and precisely using a very fine needle to ensure you feel little more than a pin prick. A topical anaesthetic can also be applied prior to treatment to reduce discomfort further.
  • Anti-wrinkle injections are painless and the results should last 3-4 months, after this time you will need to have a top up treatment to keep your skin looking its best.

Warning

There has recently been a large increase in the number of people falling victim to unqualified practitioners offering cut price injections. Do not let yourself become one of the hundreds of people who end up in A&E each year with damage caused by improperly administered anti-wrinkle injections, by ensuring that you only receive anti-wrinkle treatment from a qualified practitioner.

Call The Essex Smile Centre today on 01268 742333 and book a free consultation. You can be sure that you will be in safe hands.

Stay hydrated this summer

6th June 2017

With the sun finally starting to peep out through the clouds, summer is definitely coming, but did you know that some of your summer favourites could cause damage to your teeth.

During the summer months, it is quite likely that you may increase your consumption of carbonated drinks, whether diet or full fat, citrus fruits and berries, white wine and cider. All of these have a low pH and can therefore cause acid erosion.

Every time you eat or drink anything acidic, the enamel on your teeth is softened and it takes time for the saliva to return the pH in your mouth to neutral. If these attacks happen too frequently, your mouth does not have time to recover and tiny bits of enamel are brushed away. When the enamel on teeth is worn away, the sensitive dentine is exposed and this can lead to pain and sensitivity.

Tips to keep your teeth healthy

  • Brush for at least two minutes, twice a day, using a fluoride toothpaste. Studies have shown most of us brush for only about 45 seconds. To get an idea of what two minutes actually feels like, set a timer or play a song while brushing your teeth.
  • You don’t need to give up acidic foods in your diet, particularly fruit, but take a fresh look at how you eat them and how often. If you’re eating something acidic, have cheese, milk, or another non-acidic food or drink with it and wherever possible try to have acidic foods and drinks at mealtimes.
  • Use a straw when enjoying acidic drinks and don’t swish them around or hold them in your mouth. This will reduce the amount of acid that comes into contact with your teeth.
  • Try not to brush your teeth immediately, aim to wait at least an hour after eating or drinking, to reduce the risk of brushing away the softened enamel and make sure you’re using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Make sure you visit your dentist regularly. The dentist will be able to identify any issues early and this reduces the risk of needing extensive, expensive treatment.

If you are concerned you may be suffering from acid erosion, our dentists are able to help. Call The Essex Smile Centre on 01268 742333 and book a consultation.

Top tips for teaching your children good dental habits

Top tips for teaching your children good dental habits

Teaching your children good dental habits from a young age is an investment in their health that will last a lifetime.

Here at The Essex Smile Centre we have 5 top tips to ensure that you help to protect your children’s teeth and gums:

1. Lead by Example

It is important to ensure that you set a good example. By taking good care of your own teeth, you send the message to your children that oral hygiene is an important part of daily life.

2. Make brushing fun

There are a number of ways to ensure that tooth brushing does not become a chore. This could include letting your children pick their own toothbrush with their favourite TV and film characters or brushing along to their favourite song to ensure that they are brushing for the recommended two minutes.

3. Incorporate technology

An electric toothbrush can be a great motivator for children to regularly brush their teeth. There are a wide variety available aimed at children so you are bound to find one that appeals to your child. There are also apps available to help track brushing with rewards for those who manage to brush for two minutes, twice a day, all week.

4. Show missed areas

Using disclosing tablets once a month can provide a great aid to show any areas that need further attention. By joining in you can show that no-one gets everything perfectly all the time, but good brushing technique can help to reduce those areas routinely missed and avoid the risk of decay.

5. Attend for regular Dental Appointments

It is recommended that children start to attend for dental appointments with their parents as soon as their teeth first start to come through. This ensures that they get used to the unfamiliar noises, smells and surroundings. By starting early, you can reduce the fear so often associated with a visit to the dentist.

Call The Essex Smile Centre today on 01268 742333 and book your children’s appointment and start them on the path to a lifetime of good oral health.

Top tips for a peaceful night

11th April 2017

Snoring occurs when during sleep the lower jaw and tongue can fall back, reducing the size of the airway in the throat. The narrowed airway means that the lungs need to draw air in at a higher velocity in order to ensure you still receive enough oxygen. The increased airflow causes soft tissues in the throat and behind the tongue to vibrate.

It is believed that around one third of people suffer with snoring to some degree. Snoring is known as a chronic condition and can leave to serious health problems. It can lead to a lack of energy, poor concentration, mood swings and irritability. Snoring can also put serious strain on relationships. Couples affected by snoring often go to bed at different times and may even sleep in separate bedrooms.

Snoring Solutions

1. Exercises
Exercises designed to reduce snoring aim to strengthen and tone the throat and jaw muscles are likely to be beneficial in reducing snoring.

2. Sleep pillows
Sleep pillows aim to maintain an open airway using positional therapy. Positional therapy can offer some help in mild snoring cases. However, the sufferer can move at any time making the pillow ineffective.

3. Nasal Strips
Nasal strips work on the assumption that snoring is caused by a nasal blockage and they therefore aim to increase the dilation of the nasal passage and improve the airflow. Although some snoring can be linked to nasal blockage, the majority of problematic snoring is caused by reduced airflow in the throat.

4. Surgery
This is a popular choice as it offers a lifetime cure from snoring, with a short operation at the back of the throat with a laser. Unfortunately, the results from this have not been very positive as for some people surgery does not work and for others they find that the effects wear off over time.

5. Specialist Oral devices
Here at The Essex Smile Centre we are able to offer three different specialist oral devices to help improve your snoring – Somnowell, Sleepwell and BluePro. The customised dental splints are worn during sleep and help to align the jaw, maintaining a clear airway. This can help to reduce and even eliminate snoring. With a range of different designs and materials we will be able to find the best device for your needs.

Call The Essex Smile Centre today on 01268 742333 and book your appointment to find out if we can help you get a peaceful night.
